Welcome to the Silver Strand Half Marathon

The 11th Annual Silver Strand Half Marathon & 5K is Sunday, November 14, 2010. Run along the Strand from Coronado to Imperial Beach! Coronado is located across the bridge from downtown San Diego. Imperial Beach is located twenty miles south of downtown San Diego.

The 5K Run/Walk starts and finishes at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza at 7:00 a.m. Run the 5K and then enjoy the post race festivities while watching the half marathoners cross the finish-line.


Run, Walk or SKATE!

The half marathon course is open to runners, walkers and skaters.

The skate is back for 2010! Bring out your inline skates, rollerblades or roller-skates and speed your way down the Strand. Helmets are mandatory. Knee and wrist guards are highly recommended.

AID STATIONS:
There will be 6 aid stations on the half marathon race course. The water stations are located approximately 1.5 miles apart. Water will be available at all 6 stations and energy drink will be available at 4 of the water stations. Energy gels will be available at one station near mile 7. Water is also available at both the start and finish areas.



HEAD NORTH CHALLENGE     

HeadNorth Foundation, a San Diego-based nonprofit foundation that exists to enhance the quality of life for people faced with the daily challenges of a spinal cord injury (SCI) by providing essential support and guidance, has launched a sponsorship program for hand-cycle and wheelchair participants for the November 15th Silver Strand Half-Marathon and 5K Race.

All money raised from the sponsored participants will go towards the HeadNorth Foundation. HeadNorth hopes to raise $40,000 at the event.

CHALLENGED ATHLETES FOUNDATION

Make your event more meaningful! Sign up to raise funds for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) through our Race for a Reason program for the Silver Strand Half Marathon and earn great incentive prizes as well as a change to race alongside our amazing para-athletes. The funds you raise will help change the lives of physically challenged athletes by giving them the opportunity to live an active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive athletics.

Getting started is simple: Fill in the online registration form and pay the $25 registration fee. CAF will then send you your password for your own fundraising web page, where you can create a customized page and email all your friends and family about your goals, the exciting event you are participating in, and why you are raising money for CAF.

CAF makes fundraising easy. Sign up, and you will receive your own official fundraising web page, an easy to follow fundraising kit, inspirational emails, a Race for the Reason technical training shirt, and an opportunity to earn great incentive prizes.

EXPO INFORMATION

HALF MARATHON & 5K EXPO

The mandatory Silver Strand Half Marathon expo is on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the TOBY WELLS YMCA in Kearny Mesa from 10:00 am to 3:00 p.m.

Toby Wells YMCA is located at: 5105 Overland Drive, San Diego, CA 92123

5k participants are welcome to attend the expo to pick up their bibs. It is not mandatory for 5k participants to attend the expo. If you are a 5K participant and you choose not to attend the expo, your bib will be available for you at the 5K start on race morning beginning 6:00am. 

All half marathon participants must attend the expo and pick up their own race materials. Participants will need to sign the waiver, pick up their T-shirt and their goodie bag. We do not allow friends or family members to pick up for athletes. ID's are mandatory at the expo.

If you are unable to attend the expo please select the Mail Bib Number option for $15. (deadline for the mail bib option is October 26, 2009) Your T-shirt and goodie bag will not be mailed out to you. They will be available for pick-up at the finish line after the race.

There will be a $10 late packet pick up fee for race day pick up.


EXPO DIRECTIONS:

Take 163 North: Take Exit 8 for Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Turn Right at Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Turn Right at Overland Avenue. Turn left at Lightwave and look for event parking signs.

From 1-15: Take Clairemont mesa Blvd West. Turn left on Ruffin Rd. Turn Right at Lightwave Avenue. Look for event parking signs.

From I-5: Take I-5 North or South. Take the 52 East. Take the Kearny Villa Rd exit. Turn right at Kearny Villa Rd. Continue on Ruffin Rd. Turn right at Lightwave Avenue. Look for event parking signs.

Discount - $10 half marathon discount for Challenged Athletes, Active Military, City of Coronado Residents, City of Imperial Beach residents. Not applicable for Relay Teams.


Refund & Transfer Policy

Partial refunds and transfers are available. Cancel by August 6th and receive a refund, minus a $10 cancellation fee. Cancel after August 7th and receive a refund, minus a $25 cancellation fee. Once the race sells out, refunds will not be offered. You may transfer your entry to the 2011 event or to another person until November 1st. To transfer your entry to the 2011 event or to another person, you must download a SSHM Transfer Form. Transfer form must be received or postmarked by the November 1st deadline. There is $15 transfer fee for all transfers.
 


Half Marathon Bus Shuttles

There are four bus transportation options to choose from when registering. (Bus shuttle timeline is listed above)

Option 1 - Drive your car to Silver Strand State Beach before the start. Take the bus shuttle to the start. Take the shuttle back to Silver Strand State Beach after the race.

Option 2 - Have someone drop you off at the start at Sunset Park and pick you up at the finish at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza.

Option 3 - Park your car near the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza (limited parking). The first 200 participants ONLY may take the free bus shuttle to the start at 5:45 a.m. sharp. There will no service after this time.

Option 4 - Park your car near Coronado City Hall at 1825 Strand Way. (very limited parking)


Directions

5K START - Imperial Beach Pier Plaza Take 1-5 south to Hwy 75/Palm Ave (Exit 5A). Go west on Palm Ave. Continue on Palm by turning left one block past Ninth St. Continue west on Palm to 2nd St. Turn left on 2nd St. and go south six blocks to Evergreen Ave. Find street parking. Walk one block to the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza on Seacoast Dr. (Directions differ from expo due to course road closures).

HALF MARATHON PARKING - Silver Strand State Beach, Coronado Take 1-5 south to Hwy 75/Palm Ave (Exit 5A). Go west on Palm Ave to Silver Strand Blvd (Hwy 75). Head north on Hwy 75 to the Silver Strand State Beach located across from Coronado Cays Turn left into beach parking lot. Park and take shuttle to start.

HALF MARATHON START - Sunset Park, Coronado

Directions are for athlete drop off only. There is NO parking at the start. Take 1-5 south to Hwy 75/Coronado Bridge (Proposed Exit 14A). Go west across the bridge to Orange Ave. Turn left on Orange Ave. Turn right on 10th St. Go 4 blocks and turn left on G Ave. This will take you to Ocean Blvd. This will take you to Ocean Blvd. The start is 4 blocks to the right. There is NO parking at Sunset Park and along Ocean Blvd.


COURSE INFORMATION

Half Marathon Course

The 13.1 mile scenic course is a flat and fast point-to-point route from Sunset Park in Coronado to the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza, mainly on Silver Strand Blvd., Hwy 75.

Starting at Sunset Park in Coronado the course heads south on Ocean Blvd. Continue to Orange Ave. At Orange, turn right and head south on Hwy 75 and the Silver Strand. In Imperial Beach, turn right on Rainbow Dr. into a residential area (check website for expanded directions) and into the Naval Radio Receiving Facility (NRRF). After exiting the NRRF, turn right on Carnation Ave. At Seacoast Dr. turn left for the final quarter mile to the finish at Imperial Beach Pier Plaza.

5K Course

Starting at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza the 5K runners head north on Seacoast Dr. Turn east on Carnation Ave. At Silver Strand turn north into the Naval Radio Receiving Facility (NRRF). Head east on the perimeter road to the marked course U-turn. Return to the finish at the Imperial Beach Pier Plaza via same route.


Party at the Pier

After the races kick back and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Party at the Pier. There will be live entertainment, beer garden, post race food, fluids and massage.


Awards

Finisher medals to ALL half marathoners! Half marathon and 5K running awards will be given to the top three overall finishers and the top three finishers in each division. Skate awards will be given to the top three in five year age increments. The 5K award ceremony is scheduled for 9:00 am and the Half Marathon awards ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 am.All entrants will receive a 100% cotton race t-shirt and goodie bag.

National Leg Amputee Championships

Life without limitations! The world top amputee athletes will gather at the start and compete for a prize purse of up to a total of $3,000 dollars at the National Leg Amputee Championships. The divisions for the National Leg Amputee Championships include hancycles and wheelchairs for the half marathon participants and for the 5K amputee participants.

BOOK ROOM

3 STAR: Crown City Hotel (800-422-1173) is located in Coronado about 2 miles from the start line. Discounted Hotel rates have not been implemented for the 2010 Silver Strand Half Marathon at this time.

2 STAR: The Sandcastle In is located in Imperial Beach on block from the finish line. Rooms are very limited and discounted pricing for the Silver Strand Half Marathon is not available at this time.


Volunteer

Come be a part of the half marathon excitement! Hundreds of volunteers are needed to staff water stations, help with timing and support the runners at the start and finish.
